Pirate Treasure

Read Pete the Cat and the Treasure Map and Shiver Me Letters, make a handprint pirate and an exploding treasure chest, then top the day off by setting up a treasure hunt for the kids.
Handprint Pirate:
  • White and black paper
  • Black, Tan/brown, red paint
  • Google eye
Exploding Treasure Chest:
  • Ice cube tray
  • Baking soda
  • water
  • Jello-O powder
  • little treasure (pennies or plastic gems)
  • glitter (optional)
  • squirt bottle of vinegar

Pizza Pizza!

Read Pizza Day and Pete the Cate and the Perfect Pizza Day, make paper pizzas, practice counting by adding pepperoni (dot stickers) to the paper pizza, have the kids practice ordering the steps to make pizza, make pizza with homemade dough or english muffin pizzas.
Pizza Craft:
  • brown and red construction paper (cutout pizza crust and sauce cirlces)
  • red and black dot stickers for toppings
  • yarn pieces (cut for cheese topping)
  • glue 
  • scissors to cut pizza into slices

Bears

Read Brown Bear, Brown Bear - What Do You See?, Polar Bear, Polar Bear - What Do You Hear?, and We're Going on a Bear Hunt. Make cardboard bears and a set of binoculars with toilet paper rolls. Use the binoculars and setup a bear hunt for the kids with a stuffed bear. Looking to do more? If so, host a teddy bear drive to donate to a local charity.
Cardboard Bear Craft:
  • brown, black or even white paint for a polar bear
  • empty toilet paper rolls
  • brown, black, white and pink construction paper
  • googly eyes
Binoculars:
  • 2 empty toilet paper rolls
  • construction or butcher paper

Camp Out

Read Pete the Cate Goes Camping and Curious George Goes Camping. Make a handprint campfire, build a toothpick tent, and setup a tent in the bakcyard or build a tent inside with furniture and blankets. For a snack, make s'mores or s'more trailmix. Also, introduce Fire Safety and create a fire safety plan.

  • Construction paper

  • log template (optional)
Toothpick Tent Challenge:

  • mini marshmallows
  • tissue or napkin
  • small figurine

Colors

Read The Day the Crayons Quit, Elmer the Patchwork Elephant, and Dog's Colorful Day. Create your own colorful Elmer and have the kids recall and retell Dog's Colorful Day. Explore science with the Walking Water experiment and send the kids on a rainbow scavenger hunt. For a snack make a rainbow fruit skewer or sort and eat some rainbow goldfish crackers.
Elmer Craft:
  • colored construction or tissue paper
  • scissors and gluestick
  • elmer template
  • (consider having the kids tearing paper pieces instead of cutting)
Dog's Colorful Day Activity:
  • template
  • markers/crayons, paint stampers or construction paper
  • have the kids recall the story and add the colors to the dog as they retell it
Walking Water:

  • 7 small clear plastic cups
  • food coloring in primary colors

Under the Sea

Read I Spy Under the Sea, The Rainbow Fish, and A House for Hermit Crab. Explore A House for Hermit Crab learning activities and have fun painting a rainbow fish, making ocean slime, and enjoy an Under the Sea yogurt snack.
Rainbow Fish Craft
  • template
  • water colors or markers
  • foil for the shiny scale
Ocean Slime
  • clear washable school glue
  • liquid starch
  • food coloring
  • water

  • sea shells, plastic sea or ocean animals (optional)

Zoo

Read The View at the Zoo and The Biggest Shadow in the Zoo. Make paper plate zoo animals and play an active zoo animal game. Try a science experiment by making elephant toothepaste and learn more about shadows with fun shadow activities. For a snack, make a graham cracker lion. If you want to see some real-life zoo animals from your home, check out your local zoo live cams or explore the San Diego Zoo website.
Zoo Animal Craft:

Zoo Animal Game
  • soft pocket die (or empty kleenex box)

Snow Day

Read Sneezy the Snowman and Snowy Day, make a coffee filter snowman, play snowman bingo with marshmallows, practice marshmallow counting or marshmallow addition, go outside and build a snowman, and enjoy a yummy cup of hot chocolate!
Coffee Filter Snowman:
  • white coffee filter
  • blue, orange, black construction paper
  • crayons
  • glue stick
  • block dot stickers for smile (optional)
  • scissors

Valentine's Day

Read Love Monster, Pete the Cat Valentine's Day is Cool, and Danny and the Dinosaur: First Valentine's Day. Make a heart hat and a Love Bug, practice counting and sorting with candy heart,  and play Valentine's Bingo with candy hearts.
Heart Hat:
  • white or colored paper plate
  • scissors
  • paint, crayons, or stickers to decorate
Love Bug:
  • red, pink, black construction paper
  • pipe cleaners
  • glue and scissors
  • crayons or markers
  • googly eyes

Easter

Read The Great Eggscape, How to Catch the Easter Bunny, and Pete the Cat - Big Easter Adventure. Make Easter hand print cards, design an easter egg puzzle, have an easter egg hunt, play "hop"scotch, and make hard boild eggs for lunch (have the kids practice peeling eggs).
Easter Hand-Print Cards:
  • white, black, orange, yellow and pink construction paper
  • cotton balls
  • googly eyes
  • small pink poms (optional)
  • scissors and glue
Easter Egg Puzzle:
  • draw or print an outline for an easter egg
  • draw diagnol, zig-zag or wavy lines on the outline
  • have the kids decorate the egg, cut along the lines, then put the puzzle back together
